DAY 1 Welcome to Split
Meeting with the guide in Split. A short briefing and introduction into upcoming days, followed by city tour of colorful and vivid Split town centre and its heart – Diocletian’s palace built 1700 years ago. In the evening we go for a delicious lunch in a local tavern. Nowhere else you can find such a Roman palace where people are actually still living. More than just tourist place – until recently very few tourists would spend more time than needed to catch a ride to islands. One of the biggest Croatian secrets (but not the last) has been disclosed and it’s no wonder since Split and its surroundings have a lot to offer starting with the glorious past and many influences it has had in the course of the centuries upon architecture, culture, gastronomy, sports, way of life and already a legendary laid-back mentality of Dalmatia of which Split is, after all, the capital. When in Split almost everything is within the walking distance; the downtown, port, bus and train station, restaurants, bars, town’s beaches, Marjan’s viewpoint…it’s impossible to present here all there is to see in Split, so take it easy…or as locals put it: pomalo
Meals: late lunch
Activity: guided city tour
DAY 2 Biokovo mountain exploration
After early breakfast we will take a shuttle from Split to Makarska Riviera, (about 50km), situated at the foothill of mountain Biokovo which is a part of the Dinaric Mountains and as such has a direction of NW-SE. Other than its position, Biokovo is unique also because of its geomorphology and its biological diversity which were the main reasons Biokovo was proclaimed a Nature Park in 1981. We will do our hiking tour from Gornja Brela village to Bukovac peak 1290 meters above sea level. Our hike starts from about 300 meters above the sea and takes us through beautiful vistas – among the best in the whole mountain. The trail is good and hike itself is worth every drop of the sweat, especially with the view from the top. On the other hand when seen from the Riviera coast perspective Biokovo seems so powerful, yet inviting against clear blue sky, and it is up to us to check it. Why? Simply because it’s there…
After we finish our hiking route, we will have late lunch in one of the local taverns in the Riviera.
Overnight in Split.
Meals: breakfast + late lunch + picnic
Activity: Hiking Biokovo mountain
Hiking time: 3 h
Total duration of hiking 6h
Difficulty: medium/ high
DAY 3 Ciovo sea kayaking expedition
Today we will relax from walking and enjoy sea kayaking tour. After breakfast we will meet for the sea kayaking. This full-day paddling adventure to Čiovo island has everything you’re looking for — gorgeous views, the feeling of being far away from civilization and terrific swimming/sunbathing in a secluded coves accessible only by sea. We’ll set out from one of the beaches on Marjan peninsula and then paddle south across the Čiovo channel to enjoy stunning views of Split, framed by the mountain ranges above the city; rugged coast and the islands of Brac and Šolta shimmering in the distance. And keep your eyes open for sea birds swooping down from their nests in the cliffs to catch a tasty meal and if you’re lucky, maybe some of Ciovo’s dolphins will make a playful appearance! After we return to our sea kayaking base on Marjan peninsula, we will have late lunch in a beach restaurant.
Meals: breakfast, late lunch
Activity: Sea kayaking 2,5-3,5 hours, tour in total around 5h
DAY 4 Highest island peak
After breakfast we will take a ferry from Split to the island of Brac for full day Brač exploration through its hiking trails and roads. As we arrive to Brač our shuttle will first take us to visit the Museum of the island in Škrip village – the oldest settlement on Brač. The riddle of the history of Brač is probably here in Škrip although it hasn’t been entirely solved yet, such as who really built megalithic structures there and when. Nevertheless, numerous findings from the area displayed in the museum and expert guidance will tell us a lot about island’s history and traditional way of living. Afterwards we will visit a museum of Olive Oil.
Then our van will take us to the highest peak of the island Vidova Gora with a view to the open sea, Hvar and other islands , followed by great meal in a local tavern. When we have digested the lunch we’ll go for a hike to get to the Monastery of Blaca – an incredible oasis of culture and nature; monument to hard work and creativity built by hermit priests that settled there in 16th century around a cave in a rocky ambience of a gorge accessible only on foot.
Return to Split on the evening ferry.
Meals: breakfast, late lunch
Activity: hiking 3-4 hours
DAY 5 Hvar town and sea kayaking
The journey to Dalmatia would be incomplete without visiting Hvar – one of its most attractive islands. So today after breakfast we will take a ferry from Split to Hvar where we will spend overnight. As we arrive to Hvar town, we will join afternoon sea kayaking adventure to the beautiful archipelago of Pakleni islands.
The starting point of the kayaking tour is the town of Hvar. The origin of the word Pakleni goes back to the old days when the islands were the main source of rosin for local shipbuilders. Today, just like then, the islands are covered with thick pine woods providing refreshing shade even during the hottest summer days. The route through narrow straits and along the islands reveals small hidden pebble beaches where you can enjoy the privilege of having, at least temporarily, a beach all yours for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing. Lunch in a beach restaurant.
The evening is a great opportunity to taste Hvar’s nightlife vibes. The town’s rich history and Mediterranean architecture provide wonderful setting for little shops, restaurants and bars.
Meals: breakfast + late lunch
Activity: sea kayaking tour to Pakleni islands
DAY 6 Hike to the ghost village
After breakfast we will take a short ride from Hvar to the starting point of our hiking route. Great day awaits us – we’ll meet a local lavender producer, spend some time with him to hear interesting facts about the origins and production of lavender in these parts. The hike encompasses two villages of which Velo Grablje is the first on our route – it was founded five hundred years ago when Hvar’s patricians and nobles sought refuge in the hills during the epic rise of the disempowered plebeians. Nowadays there’s only a few inhabitants in the village throughout the year except when they gather for lavender festival during the harvest, distillation and celebrating the villages’ saints. Then we hike down the canyon to get to Malo Grablje – little village abandoned in the fifties of the last century due to hardships of life. Nevertheless when walking its alleys between the houses that once where bursting with family life and now reclaimed by vegetation you can almost imagine and hear children’s play or adults talking about the quality of the olive oil they’d just made. Next we will have a simple but delicious lunch in a special ambience of perhaps the most authentic island’s tavern right there in Malo Grablje .
Meals: breakfast, lunch
Activity: Hiking 3-5 hours
