The first settlements on the island date from the Neolithic period (6000 - 4000 BC). In the 5th century BC, the Illyrian tribe of Liburnians established their state there and about 200 years later, the Syracusan autocrat Dionysius founded a Greek colony called Issa on the location of the present town of Vis, and planted the first grapevine. The wine is still good. Because of the danger of the pirates, the settlements were formed in the interior of the island during the Middle Ages. The main settlement from that time is Velo selo. During the 15th century, larger settlements like Komiža and today's Vis started to emerge on the coast.
