HvarThe island of Hvar is one of the most popular travel destinations on the Adriatic Sea. On its south side of the island is the city of Hvar. After the construction of the fortress on the hilltop above the harbor, the city grew in importance. In time it surpassed Stari Grad so that even the bishop moved its seat there. The city has a number of interesting sights that bear witness to the centuries of its history. In 1612 the Hvar theatre was opened, the oldest public theatre in Europe. The theatre is active even today; on its stage a number of plays are performed, especially during the summer months. On the hilltop above the city rises the town fortress, known as Fortica. It was built on the remains of a medieval fort from the 16th century. The buildings inside the fort were built during the rule of the Austrian Empire. Today, Fortica is completely renovated and it houses a museum, restaurant and the largest disco club on the island.
